Mary Ellen was born in 1893. Mary Ellen's father was John Jacob Stroup and her mother was Sarah Jane Coats. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Jackson Stroup and Elizabeth Myers; her maternal grandparents were George W. Coats and Sarah. She had five brothers and a sister, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named James, Henry Cleveland, Bert Oliver, Enos Eldridge, A. J. Holt, Elizabeth and Stroup. She was the third youngest of the eight children.-
