A. J. Holt was born in 1904. A. J. Holt's father was John Jacob Stroup and his mother was Sarah Jane Coats. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Jackson Stroup and Elizabeth Myers; his maternal grandparents were George W. Coats and Sarah. He had four brothers and two sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named James, Henry Cleveland, Bert Oliver, Enos Eldridge, Elizabeth, Mary Ellen and Stroup. He was the second youngest of the eight children.-
