Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Jackson Stroup and Elizabeth Myers; her maternal grandparents were George W. Coats and Sarah. She had five brothers and a sister, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named James, Henry Cleveland, Bert Oliver, Enos Eldridge, A. J. Holt, Mary Ellen and Stroup. She was the second oldest of the eight children. She died about 1886 in , , Tennessee.-
