His paternal grandparents were Jacob Jackson Stroup and Elizabeth Myers; his maternal grandparents were George W. Coats and Sarah. He had four brothers and two sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Henry Cleveland, Bert Oliver, Enos Eldridge, A. J. Holt, Elizabeth, Mary Ellen and Stroup. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died about 1883 in , , Tennessee.-
