Bettie Jane was born in 1862 in Mecklenburg County, NC.1 Bettie Jane's father was John Barnett Thomasson and her mother was Mary Ann Sims. Her paternal grandparents were David Turner Thomasson and Mary Jane Barnett; her maternal grandparents were James Anderson Sims and Isabella Deweese. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James T., Daniel Penick, John Oehlar, Emma Reeta, Mary Isabella, Margaret Sarah Octavia, Frances Elizabeth and Annie May.
