Margaret was born in 1847.1 Margaret's father was Andrew Alexander Crawford and her mother was Rachel Tinnon. Her paternal grandparents were John Crawford and Margaret Buchanan. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Hugh, Andrew Neal, Martha Halbert, Lucy, Emily and Alice. She was the second oldest of the seven children.
