"Aunt Vic's" obituary appeared in the June 8, 1950 Pocahontas Star
Herald.  Mrs. Victoria Collier Bates, aged 86, wife of Horac e Bates, died
at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Elbert (Celia) Robinson, in Poc ahontas,
at 11:20 Sunday night.  She was born in Randolph County June 16, 186 3, a
daughter of the late J. W. and Susan R. Collier, pioneer settlers of the
county.
She was a faithful member of the Free Will Baptist Church and was t he
last surviving charter member of the local church.  She was married to
M r. Bates, Dec. 28, 1880 and they were parents of 9 children, 5 of whom
surviv e.  Mr. and Mrs. Bates celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary
last Decembe r.  She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother and had
many friends who a dmired her for her find Christian character.
Funeral services were conducted a t the Sutton church at 1:30 Tuesday
afternoon by the Revs. George W. Million and W. Harry Hunt.  Interment
was in the Sutton Cemetery with McNabb Funeral Home in charge.
She leaves her husband; 3 sons, Williston, Elmer and Edward, a ll of
Pocahontas; 2 daughters, Mrs. Robinson of Pocahontas and Mrs. Tisha
H itchcock of Sikeston, MO; a large number of grandchildren and
great-grandchil dren.
