Eliza was born in 1819 in , Haywood, NC. Eliza's father was Martin Hefley and her mother was Clarissa Ann Mahaffey. Her paternal grandparents were Phillip Thomas Hefley and Mary Dever; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Mahaffey and Elizabeth Cathey. She had five brothers and a sister, named William Vance, Joseph Mahaffey, Phillip Jackson, George Whitfield, Samuel M and Harriet Caroline. She was the oldest of the seven children. She died in AL.-
