Margaret was born on November 7th, 1811 in , Trumbull, OH.1 Margaret's father was Henry Harris Gandy and her mother was Sally Harris. Her paternal grandparents were Abijah Gandy and Mary Sheppard; her maternal grandparents were Jacob Harris and Sarah Stretch. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Henry H, Shepherd M, John S, Hannah, Rachel, Sarah Ann and Elizabeth Sheppard. She had two half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Abijah, George Washington, Mary, Phebe, Matilda, Ruth Sheppard, Tamson and Polly Shepherd.-
