Elizabeth was born in 1838 in , Washington, OH.1 Elizabeth's father was David Galland and her mother was Phebe Gandy. Her paternal grandparents were Matthew Galland and Hannah Fenno; her maternal grandparents were Henry Harris Gandy and Tamson Garrison. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Artemes N, Isaac, Abijah, Mary, Matilda, Hannah, Tamson and Sarah. She was the youngest of the nine children.-
