His paternal grandparents were Guillaume II Ironarm de Poitou Ct of Poitou and Emmeline de Blois; his maternal grandparents were Othon-Guillaume de Macon Ct of Burgundy and Ermentrude de Roucy. He had a brother and a sister, named Guillaume (Pierre) V and Agnes de Poitou. He was the youngest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William VIII and Agnes.
