Henry was born in 1844 in Goochland Co., VA. Henry's father was Reuben Thurston and his mother was Mildred B. Mahanes. His paternal grandparents were William R. Thurston and Mary Thurston; his maternal grandparents were Lewis Augusta Mahanes and Drucilla Brockman. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Nathaniel James, Thomas W., Charles, Reuben, Mary C., Martha, Nancy and Mildred Elizabeth. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
