William R. was born about 1779 in Goochland Co., VA. William R.'s father was William Bailey Thurston and his mother was Jean Jones. His paternal grandparents were Francis Thurston and Hester Richards. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Archer, Meriwether, George Washington, Francis, Elizabeth Ann, Ann and Susannah.
