John was born in Hanover County, Virginia.1 John's father was Thomas Stanley and his mother was Elizabeth Crew. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Stanley and Rebecca ?; his maternal grandparents were John Crew and Sarah Gately. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Pleasant, Zachariah, Joseph, Nathan, Thomas, Mary, Anne and Sarah. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Maddox, Elizabeth and Margery.-
