His paternal grandparents were John Bailey Nicklin and Catharine Thornton Pendleton; his maternal grandparents were Daniel Pringle Kaylor and Sarah Whitfield McBryde. He had three brothers named Dwight Pendleton, Samuel Strang and John Bailey Calvert. He was the oldest of the four children.-
