Robert Ashby was born on September 29th, 1891. Robert Ashby's father was Robert Anderson Ladd and his mother was Alphra Mildred Lawrence. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mifflin Ladd and Lucy Elizabeth Cowardin; his maternal grandparents were William Quarles Lawrence and Mary Etta Woodson. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Lewis Watkins, Wellford Warfield, William Barkley, Weston Campbell Conn, Mary Bell, Birdie Winifred, Lucy Valina, Pearl Custis and Ruby Norwood. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
