Thomas was born about 1843 in Charlotte Co., Virginia. Thomas' father was Richard Granville Chappell and his mother was Mary E. Bell. His paternal grandparents were John Chappell and Elizabeth Townes Craddock; his maternal grandfather was ? Bell. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Richard G., William I., John A., David A., Henry C., Washington B., Charles, Sally and Bettie. He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.-
