His paternal grandparents were John Chappell and Elizabeth Townes Craddock; his maternal grandfather was ? Bell. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Richard G., William I., David A., Henry C., Washington B., Thomas, Charles, Sally and Bettie. He was the third oldest of the ten children.-
