Stanley's father was Edward Hill Carter and his mother was Mary Cash. His paternal grandparents were Edward Carter and Sarah Champe. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Peter J., John Champe, William, Caroline, Julia Ann and Laura B.. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Charles Warner Lewis, Robert Willis, Edward Champe, Champe Junius, Johnson and Mary.-
