Caroline's father was Edward Hill Carter and her mother was Mary Cash. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Carter and Sarah Champe. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Peter J., John Champe, Stanley, William, Julia Ann and Laura B.. She had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Charles Warner Lewis, Robert Willis, Edward Champe, Champe Junius, Johnson and Mary.-
