His paternal grandparents were William Carter and Jane Myles; his maternal grandparents were Edward Dale and Diana Skipwith. He had nine brothers and three sisters, named Edward, Thomas, Henry Skipwith, Nicholas, William, Daniel, James, Peter, Joseph, Diana, Katherine and Elizabeth.-
