Ellen Bankhead was born about 1847. Ellen Bankhead's father was John Coles Carter and her mother was Margaret Rachel Higginbotham. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Hill Carter and Mary Eliza Coles. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Charles Edward, Blenheim, Rebecca Isaette, Shirley and Sarah Coles Stevenson. She was the third oldest of the six children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Robert Hill, John Coles and Ann Cary.-
