Anna was born in 1770 in St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA.  Anna's father was Zachariah Butler and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Brooks.  Her maternal grandfather was Patrick Brooks. She had four brothers and a sister, named Patrick, Nathan, Zachariah, Joel and Mary.  She was the youngest of the six children. She had a half-brother named James McGehee.
