Thomas Joseph was born in 1841. Thomas Joseph's father was Drury Wood Knight Bowles and his mother was Mary Ann Richardson. His paternal grandparents were Knight Bowles and Martha Wood Ellis; his maternal grandparents were George Washington Richardson and Elizabeth Barrett Payne. He had four brothers and four sisters, named George Knight, John Sam, Richard A., Drury Wood, Lucy Susan, Letitia Payne, Martha Ann and Mary Eliza. He was the third youngest of the nine children.-
