Thomas J. was born about 1834 in Tennessee. Thomas J.'s father was Jesse M. Armistead and his mother was Martha ?. His paternal grandparents were John Armistead and Elizabeth Oslyn. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, John A., Joseph I., Jesse M., Julia Ann, Elizabeth and Martha S.. He was the youngest of the eight children.
