Martha S. was born about 1833 in Tennessee. Martha S.'s father was Jesse M. Armistead and her mother was Martha ?. Her paternal grandparents were John Armistead and Elizabeth Oslyn. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, John A., Joseph I., Jesse M., Thomas J., Julia Ann and Elizabeth. She was the second youngest of the eight children.
