John A. was born about 1819 in Virginia. John A.'s father was Jesse M. Armistead and his mother was Martha ?. His paternal grandparents were John Armistead and Elizabeth Oslyn. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, Joseph I., Jesse M., Thomas J., Julia Ann, Elizabeth and Martha S.. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
