Julia Ann was born about 1820 in Virginia. Julia Ann's father was Jesse M. Armistead and her mother was Martha ?. Her paternal grandparents were John Armistead and Elizabeth Oslyn. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, John A., Joseph I., Jesse M., Thomas J., Elizabeth and Martha S.. She was the third oldest of the eight children.
