- General Notes
King Aegon IV, known as Aegon the Unworthy, is considered one of the worst Targaryen kings. He sired numerous bastards and had them all legitimized on his deathbed. He was attractive and popular with women, both highborn and lowborn. People often joked that the Targaryen words might be "Fire and Blood," but Aegon IV's motto was, "Wash her and bring her to my bed".
King Aegon began his reign young and handsome, but he ended it old and corrupt, bloated and fat. His eyes were almost lost in the fat of his face, his legs too weak to support his belly. Aegon had a small mouth and a large beard used in an attempt to cover the fat of his neck and face. He had a new crown made, huge and heavy, red gold, each of its points a dragon head with gemstone eyes.
During his youth, Aegon Targaryen had an affair with his cousin, Daena the Defiant. Daena gave birth to Daemon Blackfyre, but she refused to say who his father was. When Daemon distinguished himself during a tournament, Aegon finally acknowledged him and gave him the sword Blackfyre.
Instead of trying to resurrect the dead dragons of his ancestors, Aegon tried to build new ones out of wood and iron, which burned. When one of Aegon's Kingsguard knights, Terrence Toyne, was caught sleeping with one of his mistresses, Aegon had both executed. The brothers of Terrence Toyne then tried to avenge him, but Aegon's brother, Aemon, sacrificed his life to protect him.
While on his deathbed, Aegon legitimized his bastard sons and placed them in his line of succession, after his firstborn, Daeron II. A few years after Aegon's death, Daemon Blackfyre rose against his half-brother and attempted to take the throne. Daemon was defeated, but the Blackfyres continued to trouble the Targaryens for almost 100 years.
