His paternal grandparents were Richard Harvey McCotter and Julia Ann Delamar. He was the oldest of the eleven children. He had four half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Richard Frank, Thomas York, Claud D, James W, Pauline, Regenia Bucklin Ange, Minie, Annie Brown, Mary E, Anna and Annie Estelle. He died in Duncan, Harnett, North Carolina.
