David was born in 1822 in Marden, Kent.  David's father was David STANLEY and his mother was Ann LAMBERT.  His paternal grandparents were Zebulon STANLEY and Ann SHAW; his maternal grandmother was Elizabeth. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, George Lambert, Stephen, Charles, Rebecca, Ann Bowlden, Harriet and Sarah Boulden.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
