Thomas was born in 1840 in East Peckham, Kent, England.  Thomas' father was William MARTIN and his mother was Mary Ann.  His paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann SIMMONDS. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, Henry, Mary Ann, Sarah and Maria.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
