Maria was born in 1842 in East Peckham, Kent, England.  Maria's father was William MARTIN and her mother was Mary Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann SIMMONDS. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Richard, Henry, Mary Ann and Sarah.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
