Sarah was born in 1837 in East Peckham, Kent, England.  Sarah's father was William MARTIN and her mother was Mary Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann SIMMONDS. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Richard, Henry, Mary Ann and Maria.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
