John was born in 1836 in East Peckham, Kent, England.  John's father was William MARTIN and his mother was Mary Ann.  His paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann SIMMONDS. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Henry, Mary Ann, Sarah and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
