Mary Ann was born in 1832 in East Peckham, Kent.  Mary Ann's father was William MARTIN and her mother was Mary Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann SIMMONDS. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Richard, Henry, Sarah and Maria.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
