Mary Ann was born in 1838 in Capel, Kent.  Mary Ann's father was John MARTIN and her mother was Jane.  Her paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas Richard, George, Frances, Eliza and Ann S.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
