John was born in 1841 in Capel, Kent.  John's father was John MARTIN and his mother was Jane.  His paternal grandparents were John MARTIN and Ann. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas Richard, George, Mary Ann, Frances, Eliza and Ann S.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
