Mathias was born on March 17th, 1734 in Chester, Pennsylvania.1   Mathias' father was Hugh Cowan and his mother was Ann Mathias.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Cowan and Mary Jane Davidson. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, John and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named David, Ann and Margaret.  He died at the age of 84 on February 25th, 1819 in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania.1
