John was born in 1727.  John's father was Hugh Cowan and his mother was Ann Mathias.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Cowan and Mary Jane Davidson. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, Mathias and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named David, Ann and Margaret.  He died at the age of 21 in 1748.
