Elizabeth was born in 1733.  Elizabeth's father was Hugh Cowan and her mother was Ann Mathias.  Her paternal grandparents were Hugh Cowan and Mary Jane Davidson. She had three brothers named James, John and Mathias.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named David, Ann and Margaret.  She died at the age of 42 in 1775.
