David was born in 1742.  David's father was Hugh Cowan and his mother was Mary Scott.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Cowan and Mary Jane Davidson. He had two sisters named Ann and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, John, Mathias and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 44 in 1786.
