Margaret was born in 1753.  Margaret's father was Hugh Cowan and her mother was Mary Scott.  Her paternal grandparents were Hugh Cowan and Mary Jane Davidson. She had a brother and a sister, named David and Ann.  She was the youngest of the three children. She had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, John, Mathias and Elizabeth.
