Elizabeth was born in 1938.  Elizabeth's father was Carel van der Merwe and her mother is Maria Magalena.  Her paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Elizabeth Maria Catharina Cecilia van der Merwe. She has four brothers and three sisters, named David, Ampie, David, Abraham, Annalie, Anna and Catharina.  She is the seventh oldest of the eight children.
