Carel was born on June 13th, 1902.  Carel's father was David Frederick van der Merwe and his mother was Elizabeth Maria Catharina Cecilia van der Merwe.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Christina Petronella. He had five brothers and a sister, named David, Hermanus, Jacobus, Johannes, Ockert and Jacomina.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 71 on June 12th, 1974.
