Johannes was born on May 5th, 1900.  Johannes' father was David Frederick van der Merwe and his mother was Elizabeth Maria Catharina Cecilia van der Merwe.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Christina Petronella. He had five brothers and a sister, named David, Hermanus, Jacobus, Carel, Ockert and Jacomina.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
