Jacobus was born on May 10th, 1898.  Jacobus' father was David Frederick van der Merwe and his mother was Elizabeth Maria Catharina Cecilia van der Merwe.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Christina Petronella. He had five brothers and a sister, named David, Hermanus, Johannes, Carel, Ockert and Jacomina.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 23 on March 11th, 1922.
