David was born on February 11th, 1863.  David's father was David Frederick van der Merwe and his mother was Christina Petronella. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Karel, Johannes, Jacobus, Margaritha, Zagaryda and Christina.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 87 on January 15th, 1951.
