Ampie was born in 1929.  Ampie's father was Carel van der Merwe and his mother is Maria Magalena.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Elizabeth Maria Catharina Cecilia van der Merwe. He has three brothers and four sisters, named David, David, Abraham, Annalie, Anna, Elizabeth and Catharina.  He is the third oldest of the eight children.
