David was born in 1925.  David's father was Carel van der Merwe and his mother is Maria Magalena.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Elizabeth Maria Catharina Cecilia van der Merwe. He has three brothers and four sisters, named Ampie, David, Abraham, Annalie, Anna, Elizabeth and Catharina.  He is the oldest of the eight children.
